    Causes

    Verified Expert

    The causes includes:

    • This condition results when the femoral nerve gets trapped under the inguinal ligament which runs from the groin to the upper thigh.
    • Tight clothing – compresses the nerve
    • Some of the causes of compression due to increased pressure at the groin are
    • Injury causing scar tissue formation near the inguinal ligament
    • The risk factors include:
    • Age - People between the ages of 30 and 60 are more likely to develop the disease
    • Obesity
    • Pregnancy
    • Disease condition like diabetes which can potentially damage the nerves
    • Repetitive motions that could irritate the nerve
    • Standing or walking for a long time

    Symptoms

    Verified Expert
Contact your provider if experiencing new, severe, or persistent symptoms.

Pressure on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve might cause the symptoms on the upper thigh mostly on one side of the body and these symptoms are as follows:

    • Burning pain
    • Tingling sensation
    • Numbness
    • High sensitivity to heat
    • Sensitivity to light touch rather than firm pressure

    Diagnosis

    Verified Expert
One or more of these tests may be recommended by your medical provider.
Diagnosis is done on the basis of medical history and physical examination of the patient.

    Common tests & procedures

Physical examination: Strength testing and reflex testing is done.

X-ray: To rule out other medical conditions.

CT scan: Done to rule out tumor and other probable causes of pain.

Nerve blockade: Procedure where anesthesia is injected for pain relief at the region where the nerve passes through can confirm Meralgia paresthetica.

Nerve conduction studies: Done to measure how fast electrical signals travel through the nerves.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): To rule out tumor and other probable causes of pain.

Electromyography (EMG): Is used to diagnose nerve and muscle disorders.

  2. Lumbar plexus
    • According to 2 sources
The lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh is a nerve of the lumbar plexus. [2][1] It arises from the anterior rami of the second and third lumbar nerves (L2-L3). [2][3] It passes through psoas major muscle, and emerges from its lateral border. [3]
The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve branches off the lumbar plexus, a network of nerves that connects the spinal cord in the lower back with the motor and sensory nerves of the legs and lower body. It provides sensation to the front and sides of the thigh.
